I just love getting messy with food, don't you? This weekend we decided to focus on rainbows as it rained nonstop the week before. We checked out "A Rainbow of my Own" by Don Freeman at the library. Very cute book!

Then we decided to paint. I used a recipe from Pinterest that was non-toxic since I was mainly working with Lindsay. I knew that most of her "art" would end up in her mouth. Super easy and used things that I had around the house. Condensed milk mixed with drops of food coloring. It actually goes on the paper and dries shiney. Do note that it takes a LONG time to dry. Lindsay enjoyed painting but quickly lost interest as a butterfly fluttered by or an airplane flew overhead. I will try this again with Emily who will appreciate the "sparkle" of the condensed milk.

Anything possible to stay cool and drink lots of water!! I was just telling my mom how lucky we were that it had so far been a mild summer and then we get hit with a heat wave. Both Lindsay and Emily beg to be outdoors 24/7 so I had to think of a few cool ways to have fun. First I froze food coloring to make fun paint ice cubes. Emily loved watching them melt and Lindsay kept trying to put them back in the bucket. Good activity for a hot day though.
We have alot of extra blueberries from last week's produce box so we also made a healthy blueberry ice cream that I found on Pinterest. Just blend frozen blueberries, vanilla Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey. I had to pop it back in the freezer for it to get to the right consistency but it was great and the girls loved it!
We are very blessed to have great friends who have great kids so we decided to invite Emily's friend Caroline over for a sleepover a couple of weekends ago. Carolina is 5 and is one of the best behaved children I know. I always tell her mom Shannon that she has an old soul.

I think I was more excited than the girls. I LOVED sleepovers when I was a kid. I lived out in the country of Roxboro, N.C. which is almost an oxymoron since Roxboro was an extremely rural city when I was growing up. Lot of farmers and lots and lots of tobacco plants. We lived on 10 acres or land so I didn't get to see my little friends very often. Sleepovers meant a full day and night of girl play. So fun! I don't remember anything from before I was 10 and even after that most things are fuzzy until high school (darn those ECU parties in college. Too many brain cells killed obviously). So I know realistically that Emily will not remember her first sleepover but maybe Carolina will or maybe Emily inherited her aunt's photograhic memory. Either way, I was going to do my best to make it special. After some time outside, we made cookies.

The girls played dress-up, watched Disney's Tangled and then "tried" to go to sleep. We quickly learned that Emily is a very active sleeper so the trundle bed was used.
Whenever I had friends sleepover, my mom would make monkey bread. That was a special treat that we only got on holidays and I loved it! Maybe that's one of the few things from my childhood that I actually remember. I put my own spin on this recipe and omitted raisins and nuts. I love traditions!
I cut about 1 1/2 yards of burlap into 2x2 inch squares. I folded the corners together and secured with hot glue and then repeated with the other set of corners until a balloon was formed. This tutorial has nice pictures of how to fold each "bubble". I used pins but found they didn't stick in my straw wreath for very long so changed to hot glue. Don't know if I would do this again. Definitely a labor of love!

I'm a little obsessed with hooded towels these days. After my first sewing project of a dress for Emily, I have been making towels. Not that I really have alot of time to sew but these are so easy! I used a tutorial from Creative Mommas blog that I found on Pinterest of course. Here was my first try:

We were invited to a little boy named Cole's 2nd birthday party. I decided to put my new found skills to use! I have no idea what little boys like. I have two daughters, three nieces, I am one of two girls and my mother is one of three girls. In my mind boys like dirt, worms, super heros and trucks. Nothing at the toy store spoke to me. What is something unique that I can give that a boy will like and I actually know how to make? A super "Cole" towel!

Everybody loves rainbows, me included. They just make me happy. It was rainy last weekend so we couldn't go outside. We didn't see any rainbows and decided to make our own! Very easy recipe and the kids absolutely loved it. We have hard wood floors so clean up was a breeze. I do suggest laying out a sheet if you have carpet as there is no way the rice will all stay in the box!

Rainbow rice recipe:

Buy the super big bag of rice at Walmart. I measured out about 4-5 cups per gallon Ziploc bag.

5-10 drops of food coloring. I really just did this by sight until I got the color I wanted.

2-3T of rubbing alcohol.

They both have wooden traditional Easter baskets where the Easter bunny leaves their goodies. I wanted them to have something soft for Easter egg hunts where they could hit other kids without leaving splinters or a boo boo. Both can tend to be a little aggressive when it comes to competition.

Each girl has her name bonded to the right ear. Really wish Lindsay had a shorter name, or I had a Silhouette machine as the tracing and cutting was a pain...but so worth it!
My inspiration came from a little basket I saw in Chasing Fireflies.

There are tutorials on-line with how to make a felt basket but I practiced my new mantra "Just because you can/could make it, doesn't mean you should", and instead bought two. Amazon.com had these 8 in. white felt baskets by Total Class Creative for only $3.99. Can't beat that! I then used cut out two felt ears for each basket and used Ultra-Bond to permanently attach the fabric letters for their name on one ear. Two black buttons for eyes, a pink felt triangle sewn on for a nose, and a hand-stitched mouth completed the face. I then used a blanket stitch (followed this awesome tutorial by Futuregirl Craft) for the pretty stitching around the opening of the basket and the ears. Can't wait to see the girls get their egg hunting groove on with these baskets!! I learned a very valuable aspect of my personality while making these. Cheese balls are my weakness. Diets don't stand a chance if we are under the same roof.Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12406925303121548011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6169201995551025236.post-35957908225639988462012-03-11T07:46:00.000-07:002012-03-11T07:46:50.317-07:00Happy Saint Patty's Day BreakfastI just love Saint Patrick's Day. Maybe its all that green and promise or rainbows and gold. Or maybe its the green beer. Either way, its a fun and imaginative holiday. I decided to celebrate a little with the kids to today and give them a St. Patty's Day breakfast.

These were the BEST pancakes ever! I used the recipe on the back of vanilla Chobani greek yogurt and it was great. Here it is:

1 1/2 cup vanilla greek yogurt

1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

3/4 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 egg

3/4 cup milk

Combine dry ingredients. Whisk wet ingredients, pour into dry mixture, and stir just until combined. Over medium-high heat scoop 1/4 cup batter onto skillet per pancake. Flip when bubbles appear. Cook until golden brown.

Lindsay just loves headbands. Maybe its the fact that she can be a part of Emily's girly girl team without wearing bows (considering she still doesn't have enough hair for that). I made her a plate with a green pancake smiley face with green kiwi for eyes. My artist skills were lost on her but she did clean her plate!

With most craft projects (crochet, scrapbooking, painting) I don't really like the process but really want that finished product. Do you know what I mean? I actually LIKE the sewing process though. It makes me stop and think. I tend to rush through things and you cannot rush through sewing unless you want to waste a lot of time ripping out seams. Rushing is something I obviously need to work on as I keep hearing how these are the best days of my life but it seems everyday I am counting down the minutes until the kids are in bed so I can relax or more likely - clean. Does that make me a horrible mother?!? I also learned that sewing is not a project that can be enjoyed with a glass (or two) of wine! I made that mistake while making the skirt and had to restitch three times! Anyways, I am very happy with the way it turned out! I used a tutorial from Made by Lex. I didn't add pockets and since I guess my husband's shirts are bigger than hers, I had to use a gather stitch for the skirt to make it fit the chest band. Look, I'm using sewing lingo! Ha!
I can teach and tell her things and she actually comprehends what I'm saying. Yes- teaching is an everyday part of life and yes- I realize that kids absorb alot they are taught without verbalizing. But I am an instant gratification kind of gal! I really like the positive feedback when she asks questions about something we just did or she repeats to Matt what I told her in the car. She's also old enough to take new places and not have to worry (usually) about having a potty accident or that she will have a melt down if she doesn't get her 1pm nap. She's a little person instead of a baby so I find myself wanting to expose and show her everything!

One of my goals this spring is to get Emily out of her chicken nugget comfort zone. As a family we eat pretty healthy. Maybe lacking a little in the vegetable department but we rarely eat fast food or go out to eat. I made all of Emily's baby food and exposed her to different and even exotic foods from an early age. Somewhere along the way though, she decided to become a picky eater and if a food looked new, it was not good. She also went through a stage when eating itself was overrated. At that point I was just happy to get her to eat something and hence the chicken nugget comfort zone emerged. I don't ever want food to be an issue or a big deal so I haven't pushed. This spring though I want to do more with our garden and make food fun. Sort of like those cute bento boxes where they have the food cut up to look like animals or people. Like this:

I really can't see myself going all our or making elaborate scenes with food. That just takes too much time but a little creativity goes along way in munchkin land. Tonight we had sushi. Here is mommies yummy plate:
I just loved the fact that I had another beautiful little girl to help plan a party for! John & Kelley call her "Baby Bug" so I first thought a bug theme was in store but then decided that would be better for when she was a little older and able to hold a magnifying glass (yes, I have already started thinking of activities!). I absolutely love the Llama Llama series by Anna Dewdney and since llamas were always sort of a joke with Kelley and I in college, Kelley decided that it was a good idea. Then, we found these red pajamas on Walmart.com and decided it was a PERFECT idea!

I've never been a huge fan of Valentine's. Not that I have anything against it but I have always felt it was just a commercial holiday invented to stimulate the economy after Christmas. That being said, I actually got excited about the holiday this year. Maybe its because Emily is old enough to participate and do cute heart stuff. I made Matt a special breakfast as he is such a wonderful husband.

I am SO proud of Emily. Look how well she wrote "Dad". Hmmmm...I'm seeing a pattern that the cool breakfast and Valentine's are going to Daddy....
Emily was definitely in her element. Poor Lindsay gets the short end of the stick since she is still too little to decorate cookies or Valentines without eating the glitter but I will give her a piece of cookie tonight and she will be happy.
I love even more a UNIQUE party. So when my good friend Shanna asked me for some ideas about what to do for a baby shower I decided to search the web (and Pinterest) for creative ideas. The mother-to-be has chosen blue and lime green as the nursery colors and the invitations that were sent have jungle animals. I have done the decorating onesies activity and I love that but the mother-to-be just had a shower and that was the activity. Each shower must be different!!!
Emily is 3 1/2 and attends a full-time preschool while Matt and I work during the day. From 8 weeks to about 2 1/2 she was in an in-home daycare. The in-home daycare only kept children until they were 3 years of age and didn't have an extra spot when Lindsay was born so I pulled Emily out. I've always been a person who believed that children should be children and they will learn when they are ready. The thought of homework or studying with her never crossed my mind. Now I'm not one of those mothers who just lets her kid run like a banshee outside with no discipline or sticks them in front of the TV every afternoon (I don't believe there is anything wrong with an occasional Disney movie or some TV. Heck I even learn a few things after watching Nick Jr.!) I just didn't focus on education and let her play. After being in preschool for awhile, I noticed that most of the other students were familiar with their letters and numbers. Emily knew a few but honestly could care less when I asked her the difference between a "W" and a "D". I don't want to be a mom who get anal about their 3-year-old doing alphabet drills and then the kid winds up resenting school, dropping out of school, going goth, and married to some skater dude they met less than a week ago. Aaaahhh! Okay maybe that's a little extreme but I want her to like going to school and like to learn. I don't want her to fall behind though so I decided to try "pushing" a few of the more educational toys we own instead. Such as, "Let's play with LeapFrog instead of with the Disney Tangled doll". Last night I found the holy grail of fun education toys and I just had to share.

Leap Frog's Go Fish game is awesome!!!! She really enjoyed playing a game that was one-on-one with Matt or I. She could practice matching, recognizing the different forms of a letter and she definitely showed me her skills when it came knowing her letters. Some of the other things that have worked for us are alphabet flash cards (she realized that those were more homework than fun though and now doesn't like to do those) and alphabet puzzles like the one below.

Each week her school has a letter of the week. The Sunday before that week we do a collage on the letter and talk about the sound it makes and if she is feeling randy then she will actually practice writing the letter. This usually doesn't last long but at least its a start!Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12406925303121548011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6169201995551025236.post-85103320344810763952012-01-04T11:01:00.000-08:002012-01-04T11:01:39.264-08:00New Year....New Focus...New Blog2011 was a pretty tough year. I know I should count my blessings and be thankful I have a healthy family, a roof over my head and there were wonderful memories like my sister's wedding. That being said, Lindsay was a much harder newborn that I had anticipated and also juggling two children was harder than I estimated. In 2011 Lindsay had surgery for double inguinal hernias, my mother-in-law was diagnosed and beat a very aggressive form of breast cancer, and my father-in-law was diagnosed and lost his battle with leukemia. His passing towards the end of the year just gave the holidays a hollow feeling. I am looking forward to a fresh year and redefining of my priorities.

The reason that I started this blog and business was I wanted to do something fun. I love crafting, decorating, painting, really anything artsy, and partying! Seemed like a perfect fit. In a perfect world it would be. Trying to juggle starting a business, my day job, my marriage, my two children, and attending classes at night to further my education was just too much. I was focusing less on my family and spending less time with my children. As soon as the idea of planning a party came up, the first thing I would think of was that there was another weekend I would be away from the girls. The idea of Pinwheels, Pigtails & Parties is no longer fun and no longer that "perfect" fit. I do enjoy the blog when I have time for it as it is almost like a diary of sorts and very therapeutic. If someone else can find inspiration from something I said or created, then great! If not, then that's okay too. I'm going to redesign the blog to now be just chronicle of my life as a planner, dreamer, crafter, wife, friend, and mother. If I'm honest with myself and look back over the last six months, that's really what I was doing anyways! The name still fits as I work through the week dealing with toys (Pinwheels) and my girls (Pigtails), all the while trying to make life a (Party)! Ha!

Well, that started #1of my New Year goals! I didn't want to set "resolutions" but instead goals for 2012. At the end of the year I can do a recap if I actually achieved something. (Also putting things out there on the wide world web sort of makes you accountable!) Here they are:

1. Spend more quality time with my family by focusing on being at home more.

2. Lose at least 15 pounds by working out at least 3 days a week. This means getting up at 5:30am. Oh, how I will miss sleep!

3. Stop relying on credit cards. Budget more and make sure Matt and I are on the same page when it comes to finances. We have set a budget but I am curious to see how January goes to see how realistic it is. No more crazy expensive trips to the grocery store three times a week when you were only supposed to get a gallon of milk, or $100 trips to Michaels (wipe a tear). With two kids in daycare, our discretionary income is almost nonexistent which means finding creative, inexpensive ways to eat, stay reasonable fashionable, have fun, and entertain.

4. Learn how to sew and knit. More possibilities for crafts!

5. Make our home more inviting. I have SO many plans and ideas in the works. Thank you Pinterest!

6. DECLUTTER! This goes hand-in-hand with my goal above. I have realized that I am one exciting yard sale away from being featured on an episode of Hoarders. I keep everything which can be a great thing when I am looking for a container or something to upcycle. A very bad thing when you can barely fit a person in our garage, much less a car! I am so ready to purge! Getting rid of stuff is almost as euphoric as buying stuff :). At least that's what I am telling myself.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Welcome 2012!!!!!!Heatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12406925303121548011noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6169201995551025236.post-37384134175659029202011-12-29T13:15:00.000-08:002011-12-29T13:15:23.470-08:00Merry Baking ChristmasI blame Pinterest. Or maybe that damn Martha Stewart for making me think I could be super woman this year and give everyone wonderful, handmade with love gifts, make memories with my children, see Santa, put up Christmas decorations, host Christmas Day dinner, visit all our family and actually enjoy the holiday season. As if! Next year I really need to prioritize. One thing I will not do is make EVERYONE baked goods. Or make such a variety of them. My 3 1/2 year old's teacher asked her what her mother did and she stated that "My mommy makes candy". Hmmmm.....I think I may need to take a step away from the kitchen in the New Year.

I did learn that I really like to make bread and another tip - Be the daycare mother who brings the classmate gifts a couple of days BEFORE they have their holiday party. That way your candy gift won't just be tossed to the bottom of a bag along with all the store bought candy canes that the children won't be allowed to eat since they are hopped up on sugar from all the cupcakes and treats from school.
My husband is becoming increasingly less fond of this pastime as he is always in charge of getting Lindsay or the dog to stay and look at the camera. (Is it bad that my 1-year-old responds to the same commands as the dog?) This wasn't exactly how I envisioned the Christmas pictures but they didn't turn out that bad and I didn't use any editing software for the photos. Have I mentioned how badly I want Microsoft Photoshop!!!
Here is another of my staged Christmas photo shoots. I did use Picnik for editing. How bad is Lindsay going to hate me when she gets older and sees all these naked pictures?!
I have been counting down the months until I could start talking to her about Christmas....and also for using "Santa is watching". Elf on the Shelf is all over Pinterest and the web these days and I have to agree that it is awesome. I can't wait until next year when I can do fun things like stage a snowball fight with Emily's toys and the elf or have the elf turn the milk green. This year I thought just a simple introduction to the elf and his "magic" would be enough to absorb. So this year we started a new family tradition of North Pole breakfast with a visit from our family elf. Wonderful timing as NBC had a new Elf on the Shelf cartoon on the night before!
I want my kids to look back at their childhood and think, "Wow, we had a lot of special moments. Remember when...." And, if they inherit their memory from their mother (I have a fabulous short-term memory but don't remember the street address of my first home or whether or not my childhood house had a chimney) then they can rest assure that mommy-dearest has every tradition and milestone documented. Behold, Emily's first sip of cocoa.....
I've been so busy doing fun things to put on the blog, that I haven't had time to post anything. Lindsay's first birthday party took the most time as I have definitely learned the value of punches. I was trying to be cheap and didn't buy the hole punch I think I now have arthritis in both thumbs. The Thursday after Lindsay's party was Thanksgiving. 2011 has been a very hard year for our family but we have so much to be thankful for. This was our first holiday without Dan, Matt's father. Everybody did their best but it just seemed like something was missing or a little off.

Like all holidays, Thanksgiving was busy. I love holidays and look forward to them but sometimes I wonder is it worth the rushing around and hassle. That sounds very grinchy. Maybe I need to go drink some cocoa and take a hot bath :). I started off the holiday in a relaxing frame of mind with mulled wine cider and sweet potato biscuits. My mom has the most delicate tea cups!

I was in charge of the of the Thanksgiving turkey for lunch on my mom's side of the family. I've had this honor about three times since I've been married. I don't mind doing a turkey. Everyone is always so scared of a turkey and I agree its a big piece of meat to cook but its usually pretty simple. That being said, the very first time that I ever cooked for Matt's mom and dad was Thanksgiving of 2002 and I made a turkey. Dan carved the turkey and it was raw. How embarrassing! Well, I never made that mistake again! This year was my first year trying a brine and it was fantastic! I usually do a different recipe each year but this recipe from the Food Network may be a keeper. I did use powdered ginger instead of candied and everything turned out great. Pretty bird.
I realize I have a problem. I love learning and think I can do anything (even though a lot of times my wonderful projects/ideas fail miserably). Two of my New Year resolutions will be to learn to sew and to work on my photography skills. Why wait until January you may ask? Why I have just too much going on to try and learn a skill! Work has been crazy and Lindsay's birthday party has developed a life of its own. Lindsay's cheese stroller costume was supposed to be sewn but was hot glued instead. Sewing is alot more difficult than it looks. I really thought you just put a roll of thread (didn't even realize they were called a spool or a bobbin!) into the machine, put some fabric under the needle and magically you would be able to sew. Ummmm....yeah.

Photography definitely comes more naturally for me. I have always loved taking pictures. My father always had a camera with him, even before it was cheap and cool. I can't imagine taking pictures without the help of digital edit or the crispness of my multiple pixel Canon. Granted I'm not that young and I do remember impatiently waiting for rolls of film to be developed at Wal-Mart and then only getting one or two good shots in the whole bunch. That was way before I had kids though and I think my picture taking has quadrupled since then! I want to really learn how to frame a picture though and how to use Photoshop. First I need to purchase Photoshop (Christmas HINT honey!). One random Saturday though I got a wild hair up my derriere and decided to conduct a photo shoot in my backyard. Imagine my husbands surprise when he came home to this in the backyard :). He was a trooper though and helped with holding my subjects since I quickly learned that placing a 10-month-old on top of a bunch of wobbly mattresses and blankets is not exactly something you should do. Hello mother-of-the-year award! Oh well, the last shot is my favorite. My little princess!
I get so excited about decorating. I guess that's because we go the whole summer and most of spring without a decorating holiday. Sure, I could decorate for 4th of the July but I'm not big on a house full of the red, white color scheme. I also love the fact that you can be anything you want to be for Halloween. Don't we all sometimes want to be someone we aren't? I sometimes wish when I'm covered in baby food and doing dishes to be a famous actress walking the red carpet, getting tons of free stuff and who has someone to clean up after them. Or sometimes I just want to be that neighbor down the street who totally seems to have it together and her kids are always well behaved and groomed while I'm lucky to get a brush through Emily's hair. I might get some weird looks if I dressed up like my neighbor to go trick-or-treating!

We had a great Halloween even though it was an icky Monday night and it poured rain for the actual event. Emily went trunk or treating at church on Saturday night so she had already met her candy quota for the holiday. She is so my child and she is so going to be a hoarder one day. She's not bad about sneaking candy. She just wants it near her. She will take her candy out of her bucket just to look at it and count it. I used to do the same thing as a kid. Is hoarding genetic?! Emily was a cat (I made her tutu but every other part of the costume was store bought) and Lindsay was a mouse in a block of cheese. And what a cute mouse she was!!! I was pretty proud of the way the block of cheese turned out. I also learned that a hot glue gun is alot easier than trying to learn how to sew at the same time you are trying to make a Halloween costume.
We made ghost pizza on the Sunday before Halloween. It looked really cool before it was baked, but when it came out of the oven, it just looked like regular pizza. Maybe next year I will add the ghosts on top after it has baked.
Of course I had to do Halloween gifts for all of Emily's classmates. I can't remember where I saw this idea. Probably Pinterest.com :). Her classmates got the sucker with a note from Emily and the teachers got the same but with an extra bag of candy. When I picked her up from school that day, Ms. Debra said she was destined to be a hostess (again, she is definitely my child!). Emily would jump up from whatever she was doing and run to the closet that held her treats and present one to each child as they were leaving. She was very concerned that Ms. Debra would take over her duties with the three children that were still there!
Here are some of my Halloween decorations from this year. Wonder when I will find time to take these down and put up Thanksgiving?!?
I tried to be very conscious with Emily of what I was eating when I was pregnant and that it had as little preservatives and additives as possible (I was more lax with Lindsay and maybe that's why I gained 40 pounds!). Since I work in the chiropractic field, I see the importance and hear lectures on nutrition all the time. When my neighbor became a rep for Wildtree Herbs, I knew I would be hosting a party! Usually I avoid parties like the plague. I always feel obligated to buy something and then feel obligated to go to other peoples parties when they come to mine and its just a vicious cycle. Wildtree is different though. I felt good to make them obligated to buy as I hope that maybe instead of stopping in the McDonald's drive-thru, they will head back home and make a Wildtree product. All items are natural and additives and preservative free. Since Halloween is right around the corner, I decided to do a Spooktacular Tasting Party!

Gummy worms frozen into ice cubes. I added these to a picture of water for a little Halloween "flair". I think these would be a great addition to Koolaid or individual water glasses but the ice cubes melted way too quickly in the pitcher and then we were left with a gummy worms sticking to the bottom and giving the water a weird taste.
I don't really mind the work even though I am exhausted come Monday, but I hate being away from my family. Don't get me wrong, since Emily has been waking up about three times a night (Why?!?!), I am looking forward to an uninterrupted night's sleep! I try to do something special whenever I leave so tonight was movie night. To spice things up I decided to tell Emily about drive-in movies. Even though she had no clue what I was talking about, she did love the idea of watching a new movie in her "car". We even had popcorn. How cute are my babies?!
